Removing the fear factor of going private
In a feature article for the July edition of Dentistry, Peter talks in detail about how an average NHS practice can go private with little or no interruption to the business.
The biggest stumbling block, according to Peter, is the fear of the reaction of patients when they find out that the practice is going from NHS to private. But, as Peter points out, a practice couldn’t physically cope if all the patients stayed.
He stresses the point that a reduced book is not only inevitable but an essential part of the conversion process. Peter shares his own experiences of converting and says that typically a private practice only requires a patient book which is a third of the size of an equivalent NHS book to be equally as profitable.
Once this mental hurdle can be overcome practice owners are free to take their business in any direction they want – which Peter sees as the really exciting part.
